As expected, after 3 months of neglecting my newly-migrated site, it’s once again on the move. Some of you may already have noticed that old posts were restored, hell, that the OLD (rather new) site entirely had been restored. And… yep. I powered up the old server, remapped some ports and DNS, got a new certificate, and here we are.
Let’s take a step back for a moment. You may be thinking “you’re just another fucking infrastructure chode who can’t leave things alone.” And… yeah. I am. But while it’s not so much that I “can’t leave things alone”, it’s more that I’m a control freak. With some beefed up security in place and a few other configuration tweaks, here we are. To be fair, the previous migration was a scramble not only to get back online (as if my millions of readers <insert eyeroll here> were clamoring for my invaluable input on everything) but to park things until I figure out my next/best move. And that’s how we got here.
Much of my patching is now automated at home for the retrotech.io stack. I still poke it once a week to see if it’s alive and patch versions align with the latest, and as of today I’ve only moved the website. Other services may or may not move. New hardware may be procured. That being said, I may want to procure the hardware NOW before things further deteriorate economically and it either becomes prohibitively expensive to do so, or I can’t due to scarcity or import restrictions. And that’s kind of what today’s lunatic raving is about- convincing you to pull the trigger NOW, even if it sits for 4 months until you find a use for it. Business owners, IT Managers, grab extra assets now. Obviously don’t go hog wild, be methodical about both cost and what you acquire, but a couple of spare laptops or basic servers will age just fine in the box the next few months or years until they’re deployed in most cases.
My hopes is that putting my website back in my purview in my stack will force me to pay more attention to it, but given my inability to do so in the past don’t fuckin count on it!
